Make your own Dog Treats

August 22, 2011

doggy bake fest! sunflower sensations (bone shape far left middle to bottom))

I love dogs, especially my dear best friend Frank. Frank likes treats and I have recently started to seriously learn to cook. This seems like a match made in doggy heaven and it is!  Frank loves his home-made dog treats! I have a great time making them for him. One batch makes many treats, and I tend to make a few flavors at a time so I give treats away to EVERYONE!  my neighbors, my  friends and  even my yoga students!  I can’t give them to all my friends on the interwebs (tho i have recently shipped some to a few “lucky dogs!”) BUT to all of you- I give to you some pics, and a recipe! Enjoy making your furry friends happy with lovin’ from the oven.

Sunflower Sensations
from The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup ground roasted unsalted sunflower seeds
3/4 c. cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1/4 c. molasses

pre-heat oven to 350 degrees

mix all the ingredientsin a large bowl. knead with your hands until the dough is smooth and easy to work.
form the dough into a ball and place on a floured surface. roll out into 1/4 inch thick. cut out into desired shapes. i use different shapes and sizes for each flavor. 😉

place treats on a greased cookie sheet.
bake for 20 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.
remove from the oven, cool. store in an airtight container.

Ooh these look fun! I love baking and I love my pup, so I might just have to give this a try.
